Meet the Intern: Tharp Talpas

PC: Whitney Bower

My name is Tharp Talpas (pronounced like Thorp). I am currently a senior at Texas Christian University, pursuing a degree in Strategic Communication and a minor in business. Being passionate about creativity as well as working with people, I felt as though this major was the perfect fit for me. I’m one of few college students who can confidently say they’ve stuck with the same major since day one! The College of Communication at TCU has prepared me for a position like the one here at RIDE TV. I have experience working with paid media, organic search, blog writing, and analytics. However, this is my first time to be immersed in the realm of television. I am excited to gain new skills in this field. It’s only my first week, and everyone at RIDE TV has already been so kind. I’m looking forward to what this semester here has in store.

Born and raised in south Arkansas, I’ve had my fair share around horses. My hometown was a mere 18,000 people, with no Starbucks or Chipotle within a 200-mile radius. I didn’t grow up on a farm like most people associate with southern Arkansas. But even living in the “city”, my neighbor owned Arabians, Thoroughbreds, and Shetland ponies. When I grew up there, I had fond memories of riding those horses and feeding them.

My freshman year of college, my family moved cities, but that didn’t stop my experience with horses. Our new town of Hot Springs, Arkansas is home to Oaklawn Race Track and the Arkansas Derby. I’ve grown up attending these Thoroughbred races, and it has become a tradition my family cherishes. The sense of community there is something I love most about going home. The feeling when the crowd cheers for their favorite horse right before the finish line is an adrenaline rush in itself. Our race track is also known for the 2015 Triple Crown Winner, American Pharaoh, who won the Arkansas Derby that year. Oaklawn does not hide their pride with this, with a giant statue of American Pharaoh outside the track. Hot Springs is a beautiful place, and I recommend traveling there to see a race.

Overall, I am immensely excited to work here at RIDE TV on the Marketing team. This experience will help me grow in my skills with marketing in the television industry, and help me to get a better understanding of what I want to do in my final career!
