“We would wear cowboy hats, and I would want to wear mine kind of cocked back, retro, like Dale Evans, pin-up cowgirl kinda style…”
–Kacey Musgraves

Hey friends!

Kacey hasn’t been around as long as Cher, Dolly, or Dale, but nevertheless, her ultra-western panache has earned her a spot on my list of Western Fashion Icons.

”Dime Store Cowgirl”

Before we know it, the “dime store cowgirl” or “drug store cowgirl” look, a style that peaked during the 1930s-1960s and fell in the 1970s, will be trending again- and we can thank Kacey Musgraves for bringing it back. This style, charcterized by matching sets instead of seperates, western appplique, symmetry, bold color schemes, fringe, mini skirts and shorts, cowboy hats and boots, and glitter, has all of the frills and thrills that could be found in a typical “Wild West” style show. There’s no better time than during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to try out this up-and-coming trend.

For this look, you can start by picking your color palette. For a big event like this, you’ll want one that is complementary to your hair and skin color. Style Caster has a very informative and easy to follow guide for figuring out your skin’s undertones and what colors are the most flattering on you. What really makes this trend stand out is how cowboy  it is, so don’t be afriad to really get western with your accessories.

Here’s a few pieces that will help you get started:

1.     Kacey for Lucchese cowgirl boots $400 Lucchese

2.     Silver sequin shorts $20 Forever 21

3.     Floral applique mini skirt $28 Forever 21

4.     Yellow faux leather mini skirt $18 Forever 21

”Late to the Party”

The last couple of years at NFR, a big trend was the sequined maxi skirt. This year, keep the glam of sequins, but tone it down a little with metallics and satins, instead. Above, Kacey is wearing a satin maroon off shoulder romper with bell sleeves. She keeps it western with a squash blossom and cowboy boots. If you want to go for a little more coverage, try a jumpsuit instead.

 Here are some similar rompers:

1.     Champagne satin romper $78  Nasty Gal

2.     Black satin romper with maxi overlay $35 Boohoo

“Step Off”

Here, we get an illustration of the symmetry and applique that was mentioned in the “Dime Store Cowgirl” description. Kacey modernizes the trend by pairing deep and neutral colors instead of the bright, bold colors that we see throughout western fashion history. These black velvet embroidered shorts from Forever 21 have a really cool western vibe and utilize that symmetry technique. Also, try a different color of squash blossom like Kacey has done here. Black onyx, white mother of pearl, and red coral are turquoise alternatives that I’ve come across on Etsy.com.
