In 1835, Sir Harry Smith made an epic journey from Cape Town to Grahamstown, South Africa on horseback in just six days. Now, Barry and Joe are attempting to make the same epic race against time in season 3 of The Ride: Chasing the Ghost of Harry Smith.

The first episode of season 3 of The Ride: Chasing the Ghost of Harry Smith premieres June 22nd at 8pm EST with new episodes coming out each Thursday at 8pm! Be sure to tune in as Barry and Joe attempt to trek 590 miles across the rugged South African terrain.

1. Sir Harry Smith took just six days to ride 950 km (590 miles) from Cape Town to Grahamstown, South Africa, an incredible feat of endurance and horsemanship. He chose to ride rather than make the voyage by ship, which was the norm, because of concerns about weather conditions.

2. Smith used the postal system that had already been established in order to travel efficiently. He had fresh horses waiting for him at post stations every 40 km (25 miles). This allowed him to ride at a remarkable average speed of over 22 km per hour.

3. Barry and Joe are using 40 horses sourced from South African communities in order to replicate the postal system of 1835. These horses come from local trail and endurance riding communities along the route from Cape Town to Grahamstown.

4. Barry Armitage spent almost 15 years traveling the world as a professional sailor. After he completed his travels, he returned to South Africa where he developed the concept of The Ride.

5. Although Joe Dawson was skeptical of Barry’s idea at first, he eventually came around and is a vital partner to Barry in The Ride. Joe is also Barry’s brother-in-law, and the two have become very close friends.

6. In addition to their show, Barry and Joe also host what they call “horseback expeditions.” These challenging expeditions through the landscapes of Africa focus on distance, route, and logistics.
